Go Green: Save Money, Your Health, and the Environment

Go green.
Maybe you’ve heard the slogan. But do you know what it means? Simply put it’s a movement towards a cleaner, better, happier earth. And, you may wonder, how is this accomplished? That is what this article is about.

Prepare for a shock. There are of course different levels of greenness. To seriously go green you must give up Wal-Mart. OH NO, NOT WAL-MART!! I can hear the shouting now. But yes. Wal-Mart and the likes of big box stores, Target, K-mart, etc. are not cherished by the green community. You may wonder why; here’s the answer. These stores are not designed to make the local community, or the world, a better place. They are huge money making machines. The wages they pay are not great, they routinely cut back on employees, take away from local business owners, and typically drive all small competition out of business. Their products are initially cheaper yes, but in the long term value they are not. They don’t carry fresh produce, or even fresh meat. Many of them barely have organic or earth-friendly anything. The convienience factor isthe onyl bonus to shopping there. So you’ve gotten this far, where do you buy this earth friendly stuff?

Local businesses. To start, your local meat/fish market carries fresh, less processed, probably higher-grade meats at sometimes even better prices than the big stores. If you’re a diehard go greener, you don’t eat meat. But this isn’t about that. Secondly, local grown produce carries a less expensive price, more nutrients, is fresher, and definitely supports your local economy. Local eggs, local plants, local everything, that should be your motto. Support your neighbors by buying their goods. In return your area will benefit by having a higher standard of living, all across the board, and you aren’t paying some CEO at Wal-Mart his million dollar salary that does nothing for you. You can find these better products sometimes at local co-ops all in one place, or whole foods markets.

Also, you must rid your house of the caustic harmful household cleaners almost all households in America are being poisoned with. And again, you must look outside the box to find these things, and here’s why. Your highly advertised cleaners are being sold by the millions. Much, much, money is spent on advertising and corporate salaries with no benefit to you or anyone else you probably know. In exchange your products are filled with cheap fillers to make it look like you’re purchasing more for less, and the cheaper ingredients harm the environment and you. Commercial laundry detergent is notorious for causing skin irritations due to fiberglass fillers. Commercial window cleaners can cause respiratory distress and are deadly if swallowed. Those are just two examples. Long term effects of these chemicals are controversial, but everyone agrees that we use far too much environmentally damaging cleaners. Independent research has shown these chemicals do affect our health, fertility, and increase our chances of getting certain diseases.

Where and how to you get better, safer, and usually less expensive cleaners? Your local health food store, co-op, or environmentally friendly business. How do you know what you’re getting? Well, that takes a little more education. Look for another article soon about how to purchase these products. Keep in mind, just because it says no phosphates, environmentally safe, or biodegradable, does not make it a safe product. Research your products, their ingredients, and the health effects caused by them. You will be healthier and the world will be a better place for your efforts. Be green.

Discouraged with Your Dream? Five Strategies to Reconnect with Your Goals

You’re ready to move: start a new business, change jobs, change
locations.

You made the decision. But three months later, you’re wondering, “Did I make a big
mistake?” We tell ourselves not to expect a “happy ever after” ending…but let’s face
it: that’s what most of us want!

So here are five strategies to reconnect with your dream.

1. Review your reasons for moving, changing jobs and/or starting a business.

Are you moving for “a lower cost of living” or “to be closer to family?”

Clients who move for these reasons tend to call about a year after they make a
change. They’re not enjoying their new lives, they say. They spend hundreds (or
thousands) of dollars to escape on weekends and take long, long vacations.

And often (though not always) families find they get along better with more miles
between them.

Clients who realize they’re following someone else’s dream tend to be the most
frustrated. Maybe your mentor wanted you to follow her footsteps or your family
always saw you as a business success.

The happiest life-changers are guided by their own inner compass, even when the
wind changes.

2. Give yourself time.

Clients sometimes call to say, “I moved six months ago and I don’t know anybody!”
Or, “I started my new business and still choke on the words, ’self-employed.’”

Researchers find most newcomers need at least two years to feel settled in a new
home. Getting used to the “self-employed” identity can take three to five years.

Before you move, and during the early stages, practice saying, “I am a…” Ideally,
wait to move until you feel comfortable and proud. If you continue to choke on the
words, maybe it’s time to reconsider your goal.

Some people never get comfortable saying, “I am a writer,” or, “I live in New York.”
Others just need more time.

3. Go slow when you’re new.

This recommendation is probably most important to your success.

You’ll be invited to join professional organizations, clubs and neighborhood groups.
Say no! Go to meetings as a guest – at least five or more times. See if you feel
comfortable after the first encounters.

People are almost always friendly with strangers. You’re a novelty! But after a few
meetings, you’ll be treated differently. You may find people warm up after awhile.
Or conversely they may reveal they have different values and approaches to
friendship.

Once, right after moving to a new city, I joined a group that seemed professionally
useful and also friendly. Later I learned that most meetings were held in a place
that’s very difficult for me to reach. Because I missed so many meetings, my
membership was a waste of time and money.

One client volunteered at her new Humane Society. She had loved her work for a
similar group in another city. To her dismay, the new group held very different
values about adoption and “who would make a great dog owner.” She resigned after
three months and felt awkward when she ran into members of the organization
around town.

4. Make time for something meaningful.

Go back to why you moved or changed careers. What were you hoping to achieve?
Are you following your own promises?

Let’s say you moved to a city because you wanted to be able to attend symphony
concerts or football games. Are you following through? Or are you too busy to enjoy
what brought you here in the first place?

Or you changed careers to have more time with family. Are you working through
dinner, although you no longer need to put in face time?

Why make a change if you end up where you started – overworked and frustrated?

5. Have a confidante on call.

Inevitably, you’ll have a Day of Frustration. Most likely you’ll find yourself in a place
where you absolutely, positively need to keep quiet. You probably didn’t get much
sleep the night before. You feel like sharing your feelings with whoever’s around.

Get out your phone and dial a number you chose ahead of time: a trusted friend, a
family member, even a consultant or coach. When you’re new, it’s important to
project an image of “Everything is wonderful,” no matter what. After a few months
(or years), you can begin to join the chorus of local feelings, like everybody else.

The Health Benefits of Fish Oil Explained

Fish oil is a proven food product for fighting disease and maintaining general good health. Fish oil is obtained from various species of fish such as mackerel, herring, sardines, lake trout, etc. Fish oil is safe for consumption by all age-groups; unlike dietary fish, which may be contaminated by metals such as mercury.

Fish oil is an important source of Omega 3 fatty acids; eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The Omega 3 found in fish oil is more beneficial than other forms of Omega 3 that are found in walnuts, flaxseeds, etc.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have numerous clinically proven health benefits. Fish oil has long been considered as brain food and its regular consumption enhances memory and develops concentration. Studies carried out in different countries such as the U.K and Australia have shown the positive effects of fish oil on the learning skills of toddlers. Children affected by ADD/ADHD and dyslexia benefit from fish oil, their learning, grasping, and reading skills improve appreciably. In fact, if expecting mothers partake of fish oil, the children born have an edge over their compatriots in kindergarten. DHA in fish oil boosts visual acuity in children.

Fish oil is also considered to be beneficial in treating and preventing various forms of cancer. Studies with volunteer groups show that those who consumed fish oil were less susceptible to sunburn and the harmful effects of UV rays. This could have implications in the prevention of skin cancer. Research also shows that the combination of propofil, which is an anesthetic, with fish oil can lead to the destruction of cancer cells. This opens up the possibility of developing either an ointment or a patch for treating tumors. Fish oil has also been found to be useful in the treatment of the Human Papilloma Virus, which is a common STD that leads to cervical cancer in women.

Fish oil has always been considered good for the eyes; recent studies have shown that the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil offer protection against age-related macular degeneration, which is one of the foremost causes of age-related blindness, and dry-eye syndrome in which the lachrymal glands do not function properly and the cornea can get scarred.

A recent study conducted in Denmark has found that fish oil consumption by diabetics lowered the content of triacylglycerol, (TAG) in the blood. TAG is a fatty substance linked to heart disease. Obese individuals who suffer from hypertension, insulin resistance, and high blood triglycerides can lose weight more effectively if they follow a regimen of exercise combined with regular intake of fish oil. This is because the Omega 3 fatty acids enhance the fuel-burning capacities of the cells. A study conducted in Japan found that Statins, which is drug used to lower cholesterol levels, was more useful when used in conjunction with fish oil.

Fish oil serves as a remedy for ulcerative colitis, which is an ailment of the digestive tract, characterized inflammatory pseudopolyps. Fish oil taken in conjunction with antioxidants and fiber-rich foods, helps control this ailment.

Virgin Media CD Rom fiasco – leaks sensitive data

Another recent conflict has emerged for Virgin Media, a result of failing procedures. The internal conflict remains incomprehensible, as Virgin Media consists to research the specifics of the incident. The business’s internal inquiry questions the cause of the recent loss of important personal information, releasing private subscriber details, including bank information and contact info. Such an incident places subscribers in jeopardy, opening them up to criminals for easy identity theft.

The incident involved the misplacement of a CD-Rom; one which contained loads of intimate subscriber information. The accident jeopardizes over 3,000 Virgin Media customers, releasing unencrypted information to the public, a mistake which was completely unprecedented.

According top Virgin Media policy, sensitive data collection should be stored solely on secure servers, such as the frequently used FTP networks. While Virgin Media maintains the argument that the incident was allegedly isolated, subscribers who will experience information release were all contracted at the Carphone Warehouse. These customers were contacted immediately, individually informed of the error performed by Virgin Media’s operational facilities. It is uncertain of how the company will completely resolve this service breakdown. The staff involved in the situation will be placed under questioning regarding the leak in policy. Those customers who were involved the information leak will be provided with complete fraud protection insurance, protecting their bank details and other sensitive information.

How Soon Before We See Thin And Portable Gaming Laptops

Notebook computer shipments are estimated to be in the region of 127M units this year, which is huge! Those looking for the latest montevina offerings could be kept waiting as manufacturers have already mentioned possible delivery shortages. It looks like once there are back orders those will only mount up because demand for laptops is not diminishing at all. It’s a fast changing market that is seeing new trends all the time.

An increasing number of consumers are buying laptops for gaming these days. These days you get higher specifications for your money because the next best thing is always around the corner. Gaming speed on laptops is fairly adequate considering the factors at play so if you require portability they offer a good alternative. Smaller components that perform faster and are run cooler also means that gone are the times of the big laptops for gaming. With that stated gaming laptops should never be thought of in the same league as their desktop rivals. There will be a gap and the implication here is that its not a big deal breaker for the masses. Everybody always wants to extract massive amounts of performance from small packages so I would expect thats where gaming laptops are destined.

Talking of gaming laptops, the vast options are obtainable when they are custom built. The advantage with a few custom laptops is that you get better third party components fitted in them. By being able to take away some additional things from the spec you can actually save cash on parts you don’t intend to use. Let us face facts. You most likely aren’t like the masses and so standard laptop computers won’t suffice. Custom built laptops serve everyone whatever their exact needs. Just like premade laptops there are a lot of companies offering custom laptops all with a different advantage or increase customer support. Because of this people will give up on the large brand name.

Lots of awesome notebooks are being released soon. A particular topic I haven’t mentioned is the evolution of low cost ultramobiles. total new market has appeared suddenly it looks. In my opinion the market would adapt well to a 15″ edition based on the identical roots. If we ignore processing speed I’m sure we would witness those variants of laptops today. We’re seeing thinner gaming laptops now and it looks this is set to keep on going. Notebooks get released every few months and these umpc’s surely made numerous manufactures change their plans.

I think these gaming notebooks are really good http://www.rizeon.com/gaming_laptops/page.php

Driving New Cars For Free: Is There A Catch?

Advertisers have seized upon a new way to get the word out about their products: slap their ads on your vehicle. Actually, this isn’t an entirely new way to promote products as it has been in the experimental stages for years in limited markets. Now, however, the practice has become so widespread that companies around the globe are doing it. Soon, many cars in Mexico and France along with vehicles on the streets of California, Florida, and elsewhere will be sporting ads pitching a variety of products. In some cases the advertisers will pay you a monthly rental fee to place ads on the car you already own, while in other cases you could find yourself behind the wheel of a brand new car.

When I first heard about this concept, I thought: what’s the catch? While every program is different and there are probably scammers mixed in with the legit companies, for the most part these “ads on wheels” or “rolling billboard” programs are on the up and up. You’ll have to check with the individual program for contractual details, but this is what I have found out about what some of them are offering:

Drivers must be of legal age, generally age 18 or above.

Drivers must reside in targeted countries with the U.S., Canada, France, the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, and Britain as being popular locations.

Drivers must do what they do best: drive, a lot! Yes, no letting your wheels stay put; you’ll be expected to put some serious miles on your car, especially around town where everyone can see and look at your ride.

In some cases, you can use your own car and get a monthly check. In other cases, you will be given a car for a certain period of time. In the latter situation, you may be responsible for gas, maintenance, and insurance, so make certain that what you get from the “rolling ads” is worth it to you.

So, who are some of the advertisers? Without specifying names, I have seen vehicles for a certain gecko insurance company, another for a big box retailer of consumer electronics equipment, while still another one for a local restaurant with it’s “can’t miss” repainted PT Cruiser. In addition, there are many other advertisers who see the value and uniqueness of the program and are joining in.

Yes, there are exaggerated claims of how much you could make each month or what type of car you might be getting. Sure, a Viper with ads would be cool, but can you afford the gas and the $3000 car insurance bill? Probably not. Therefore, do some “due diligence” to find out the plan that is right for you.

Rolling billboards are a novelty, one that many drivers will want in order to gain access to a new set of wheels or a repaint of their current ride. Still, for a lucky few, these types of programs will certainly help their cars get noticed. When the bill is being picked up by someone else, it could be a fun if not lucrative way to get around town.

Rootkits – Hidden Hazards on Your System

If you’re concerned about security on your computer network, there’s a new word to add to your vocabulary – rootkit. A rootkit is a set of utilities installed on your computer whose purpose is to hide what other programs are doing. They’ve been around for a few years, but they didn’t really hit the security spotlight until November 2005. That was when researchers discovered that some CDs from Sony were installing a rootkit on user computers as part of their DRM (Digital Rights Management) software. The purpose of the rootkit was to prevent the DRM software from being detected and uninstalled – but there was an unintended side effect. The rootkit opened a security hole on those computers that couldn’t be detected by standard security software, and left them vulnerable to attacks by malicious software and hackers.

That’s bad news for users and IT professionals who depend on virus and spyware detection programs to alert them to an invader on their networks. Generally, when you’re computer is infected by spyware or malware , it can be detected by monitoring your computer activity. You can check the running processes and find programs that shouldn’t be loaded. You can run a virus or spyware scanner to find registry keys and files that fit certain patterns. You can monitor activity coming in over a network.

A rootkit makes all of those defenses worthless by hiding the keys, files, processes and communications from your computer operating system. What your computer can’t see, it can’t report and you can’t fix. The methods used to hide the files and processes vary and are getting more and more sophisticated. Most do it by ‘hooking’ into a process that Windows expects to find running, either by replacing the process files, or by adding itself into them.

With the rootkit in place, the hacker has a virtual backdoor into your system. He can read your keystrokes, record passwords, gather information from your network and change your data and files. A hacker with access to your system through a rootkit can reinstall hacking programs, access your accounts and your users’ accounts and wreak general havoc. It’s the ultimate Trojan backdoor.

Once a rootkit is installed, it’s virtually impossible to detect and remove. When a virus detection or spyware program runs, they don’t see the rootkit processes – they see the process that’s cloaking it. Some may alter their own files with the details and stats associated with the files that they’re replacing so that operating systems don’t notice a difference. A sysadmin who is an expert in network security may be able to detect it by running system checks from an uninfected machine, but most agree that once a rootkit has been installed, the only way to be sure you’ve removed it is to wipe the drive clean and install the operating system.

Because rootkits don’t install themselves, you can block them by blocking attempts to penetrate your network. One way to effectuate this is to install a spyware or malware protection program to help prevent rootkits from being installed at the server level or on individual desktops. The key is to practice excellent network security at all times so that you block the programs that install rootkits.

Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of vinyl flooring

Despite the fact that there are numerous flooring options available in the market, vinyl flooring has undoubtedly been the most preferred flooring material in US for more than forty years. This is because vinyl floors are considered to be the most economical and most resilient flooring material by millions of homeowners across the country. Apart from that, vinyl floors provide better grip for the feet, are highly resistant to stains and scratches, resistant to moisture, impervious to water, easy to clean and require very less maintenance. Vinyl floors are available in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Vinyl floors are primarily made up of varying patterns of a chemical called as vinyl, a petroleum-based product that is also known as polyvinyl chloride or PVC. This is the most significant disadvantage of vinyl flooring. Vinyl is not a bio-degradable element and can cause detrimental effects on the health of the individuals and also to the environment. Even the by-products such as dioxins that are released during the manufacturing of vinyls are extremely carcinogenic. Vinyl floors are not at all suitable in homes that are built in cold places. Moreover, vinyl floor tend to adhere only to certain type of wooden surfaces.

Stay In The Know With Google SMS

The Short Messaging Service (SMS) from Google sends short, quick, text answers in response to your queries from an SMS-enabled mobile device, such as a cell phone. For example, you can look up phone numbers and addresses of local restaurants, do local phone book searches, compare prices from online merchants in Froogle to those you find in local stores, even look up definitions of words from the dictionary.

SMS has long been a common means of mobile communication in Europe. It has been available in the US for some time, but hasn’t been widely used. You don’t need a phone with a web browser to use Google’s SMS. Since the information is transmitted as text only, without graphics, only the ability to send and receive SMS messages is needed. At present, the service is only available only in English, through major US wireless carriers like AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Your service plan must allow for SMS messaging also. Use of SMS doesn’t generally count against minutes under most plans, but both your SMS to Google and the answer received from Google will typically count towards messages allowed.

Use of the Google SMS service is free at present, though of course users will need to pay any connection and messaging charges from their wireless carriers.

Google SMS can be handy for travel in particular. For example, let’s say you’ve arrived at your hotel, and really have a taste for Chinese food. You may be able to use Google SMS to enter “Chinese food delivery” followed by the zip code of your hotel. Google will return, usually in less than a minute, a list of local Chinese restaurants that offer delivery. This is a nice alternative to looking in a phone book, where you may not know the city, and also is handy for situations where you may not be able to connect to the Internet easily.
