Huge Machine Falls on Mans Foot

After penalising a company over negligence that led to a worker getting hurt on the job. The Health and Safety Executive is advising manufacturing firms to carry out safety inspections and follow safety measures to ensure workers are protected while shifting weighty apparatuses.

Last year a worker from Caltherm (UK) Ltd suffered serious injuries to his foot when an 800kg oven fell on him while he was moving it. The oven was manufactured at the company’s Rowhurst Industrial Estate unit.

The company was hit with a £10,000 fine and were also given £3,377 costs by Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates’ Court following their guilty plead to violating section 2 (1) of Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

An HSE official said the company did not have enough safety measures at the premises and the workers were not trained properly and that had led to the accident.

As a result of the injury, the employee might suffer life long pain and it can also have a bearing on his future working capability.

The HSE said a lot of accidents could be avoided if proper safety measures are taken and regular supervision was in place. HSE also said that there are a lot of training facilities for firms to help them to recognise dangers. Workplace Law is one such institution which offers the highly acclaimed IOSH course.
